The Geneva-based World Trade Organization said that China has filed a complaint with the WTO over the tariffs imposed on Chinese products by U.S. President Donald Trump.
On Saturday, Trump ordered tariffs on goods coming from Mexico, Canada, and China. He demanded that they stop the flow of illegal immigrants and fentanyl in Canada and Mexico. Later, he froze the tariffs.
China, to which Trump imposed a 10% tariff on exports of goods, had promised to contest the move at the WTO.
China’s government, citing a WTO statement, said that the measures seemed to conflict with the U.S. commitments under the agreement which led to the establishment of the trade organization.
The Chinese statement said, “China reserves its right to raise any additional claims and measures regarding the issues identified herein in the course of consultations or at any future request for a panel.”
