FEMA Pulls $80M from NYC for Migrant Hotel Costs – What’s Next?

Officials said that the Federal Emergency Management Agency had rescinded over $80 million of funding for New York City. This escalated a dispute between Trump’s administration and America’s largest city about money intended to cover hotels to accommodate migrants. A federal judge had said that he would not stop the Trump administration from reclaiming the money.

Brad Lander, City Comptroller, said that a grant of $59 million and another award of $21.5 million were gone. Lander stated that no one at his office was aware of the fact that the federal government had access to the city bank account.

Mayor Eric Adams is a Democrat. He said that city officials have contacted the White House to get the money back. They are also seeking an urgent meeting with FEMA and exploring legal options. Adams said that he would discuss the issue with Tom Homan, President Donald Trump’s border czar, when he meets him in New York, on Thursday.

Adams’ relationship with Trump and his team is about to undergo its first major test after the Justice Department ordered federal prosecutors to drop all corruption charges against him on Monday. A top official said the administration wanted Adams to be free to help the Republican President’s immigration agenda.

The city stated that the grants were awarded and applied for during the administrations of Democrat President Joe Biden, but they were not paid out until last week.

Elon Musk, a Trump adviser, flagged payments of $59 million on X, writing that his Department of Government Efficiency discovered the money had been used to house migrants at a “luxury hotel.” Musk did not provide any evidence to back up his claim.

In court documents filed on Tuesday, FEMA’s acting director said that the money is being clawed back due to concerns over “illegal activity” at a local hotel.

Lander questioned the legality of this move, saying that he has never seen anyone “authorized” to enter your account and withdraw money because political winds have changed.

Lander, Adams’s critic and his opponent in the June Democrat primary, said that this is “the first test to see if we still have an independent leadership at City Hall.”

Karoline Leavitt, White House Press Secretary, said at a Wednesday briefing that paying for hotels in the city for migrants was not an expense the administration considered worthwhile while FEMA dealt with disasters costing millions of dollars elsewhere.

Kristi Noem, Homeland Security Secretary at X, wrote that she had “returned the full payment made by FEMA deep-state activists to NYC migrant hotel.”

A federal judge ruled on Wednesday that the city can continue to refuse FEMA funds. U.S. District Judge John McConnell said in Rhode Island that the money was not affected by an order still in place to prevent an administration pause in federal funding.

The Department of Homeland Security said that four employees were fired on Tuesday for allegedly circumventing leadership to conduct the transactions. These payments have been made for many years as part of a program to help with the costs associated with a large influx of migrants.

In the last two years, New York City leased several hotels at low prices and converted them into shelters for migrants. The majority of the hotels are occupied by children and their families. Most travelers would not consider any of these accommodations “luxury”.

In 2023, the city began leasing the building that once housed the Roosevelt Hotel to serve as an intake center for migrants who are seeking city services. The hotel closed in 2020 because of the COVID-19 Pandemic. The hotel had a rich history, but it was also a good option for city travelers in the years before its closure.

New York City law requires it to provide shelter for anyone in need. At the time, the system of regular homeless shelters was overloaded with new arrivals. The hotel is now used as both a place for migrants to go to apply for services and as temporary housing for hundreds of families that can only stay for 60 days.

Republicans have criticized the FEMA-managed Shelter and Services Program. They claim that it is taking money from those who were affected by floods and hurricanes.
