Ayatollah Ayatollah Khamenei, the Supreme Leader of Iran, mocked Donald Trump Tuesday for renaming the Gulf of Mexico as the Gulf of America.
“The USA has set out to change on paper the map of the world! Of course, only on paper. In the real world, it lacks all reality,” Khamenei posted on X in Spanish and other languages. The accompanying image used the words “Golfo de México,” or Gulf of Mexico in Spanish.
One of Trump’s earliest executive orders as president was renaming the Gulf of Mexico, and on Monday, the U.S. Board on Geographic Names officially adopted “Gulf of America.” Google has updated its maps accordingly, though Mexico’s President Claudia Sheinbaum has vowed to disregard the change. While en route to the Super Bowl on Sunday, Trump proclaimed the day as the inaugural “Gulf of America Day.”
Khamenei’s comments follow a further trolling by the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, affiliated with Iran’s Fars News Agency. On Monday, the propaganda video showing a mock arrest of Trump was aired on the state-run Fars News Agency.
The Iranian leader may mock Trump, but the threat to Trump’s life is very real. Reporter Alex Isenstadt revealed on Sunday that the threats against Trump had reached a point during the campaign 2024 that Trump flew a decoy plane out of fear that he would be shot down by a sleeper cell of Iranians. Isenstadt reported that, last year “Law enforcement officials informed Trump that Tehran had placed agents in the U.S. who had access to surface-to-air missiles.”
Last week, Trump gave instructions to his advisors about the protocol to follow if Iran were to assassinate him. In an exchange with journalists, Trump stated that if they were to do this, they would be obliterated. He was signing an executive directive calling on the U.S. Government to exert maximum pressure against Tehran. I’ve given instructions that if they follow through, they will be obliterated. There won’t even be a trace.
If Trump was assassinated Vice President JDVance would become the president and not be bound to any instructions left behind by his predecessor.
