White House: Mexico Committed, Canada May Have Misread Tariffs

The White House announced on Monday that Mexico was “serious’ about President Donald Trump’s executive order regarding tariffs, but Canada had “misunderstood”.

Trump ordered tariffs against goods imported from Mexico, Canada, and China on Saturday, demanding that they stop the flow of illegal immigrants and fentanyl into the United States. This could spark a trade conflict which could dent the global economy and increase inflation.

Kevin Hassett, director of the White House National Economic Council, said on CNBC, “The good news is we have noticed that Mexico has taken President Trump’s words very seriously.”

Hasset said, “Canadians seem to have misunderstood plain language in the executive order.”

Trump said that when asked by reporters what Canada and Mexico should do to remove their tariffs, they “have to balance out their trade, number one.”

“They’ve got to stop people from pouring into our country … they have to stop people pouring in, and we have to stop fentanyl. And that includes China,” Trump said.
