Mark Carney, the Canadian prime minister, said this week that President Donald Trump’s tariffs against products from Canada and Canada-related countries “hurt American consumers and workers”.
During a campaign appearance in Ontario ahead of the Canadian election next month, Carney said, “The relationship between Canada and the United States has changed. We did not change it.”
Carney, the Liberal Party’s choice to replace Justin Trudeau as former Prime Minister and who was sworn in office earlier this month, said that Trump’s “trade warfare” is hurting American workers and consumers and will continue to do so.
He said, “I can see that American consumer’s confidence has reached a multi-year high,” referring to a report released by the Conference Board Tuesday, which stated that U.S. Consumer confidence had fallen for the fourth consecutive month and that it recently reached its lowest level since January 2021.
Carney stated that Trump wants to “break us so America can have us.” It will never happen because we don’t just look out for our interests; we also look out for others.
Carney announced that a “strategic reaction fund” of $1.4 billion would be established to protect Canadian auto jobs from the potential impact of the auto tariffs Trump will announce.
Carney stated that Canada will be there to help auto workers.
