Politico reports that House Speaker Mike Johnson and Senate Majority Leader John Thune ignored Donald Trump’s calls to impeach federal court judges on Monday.
Impeachment, as a measure, is extraordinary. Johnson told reporters that they were looking at “all the options we have” to solve this problem.
Thune added: “There’s an appellations process and, you’ll know, that’s how I suspect this will be handled in the end.”
Trump demanded last week the removal of a federal court judge who ruled in opposition to his deportation plan, writing on Truth Social of U.S. district judge James Boasberg, “This Judge, like many of ‘Crooked Judges, I am forced appear before, should be IMPEACHED!”
A small group of Republicans in the House have either introduced or signed resolutions that seek to impeach these four judges.
Trump, last week, urged the Supreme Court not to allow federal judges to issue nationwide injunctions that would block his administration. This was the latest indication of tensions between the Republican President and the U.S. judiciary.
Since Trump returned to the White House in January, federal courts have heard more than 100 lawsuits that challenge various initiatives of his administration. Some judges are issuing nationwide injunctions in order to block policies like his decision to curtail birthright citizenship.
Johnson stated that the House will hold hearings soon on the issue of nationwide injunctions, which includes “questioning judges to defend their actions, and then we’ll look at limiting the scope for injunctions.”
