In a Monday memo, acting administrator Janet Petro told employees that the National Aeronautics and Space Administration will be closing several offices as part of President Donald Trump’s ongoing effort to shrink the federal government.
Petro stated that the “phased decrease in force” “occurs in advance” the deadline this week for federal agencies informing the government about their layoff plan.
Petro writes: “While it will require difficult adjustments, this is an opportunity for us to reshape and restructure our workforce. We want to ensure we do what the law requires of us while providing American citizens an effective and efficient agency.”
Following Trump’s Executive Order, “Implementing the Department of Government Efficiency Workforce Optimizing Initiative,” NASA’s Office of Technology, Policy and Strategy, the Office of the Chief Scientist, and the Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Accessibility Branch in the Office of Diversity and Equal Opportunity will all be closed.
As announced by Trump last month and Elon Musk, head of Department of Government Efficiency, agencies are required to submit a report by Thursday to the Office of Personnel Management about the plans they have to reduce their workforce.
