A statement released by Netanyahu’s office on Sunday said that Benjamin Netanyahu told Ronen Bar, the Shin Bet head of domestic security in Israel, that he planned to present his dismissal to the government this week.
In a statement to the press, Netanyahu stated, “We are fighting for our very survival – on seven fronts. At any time, but particularly in an existential conflict, the Prime Minister must have complete confidence in the Shin Bet Chief.”
The prime minister stated, “But unfortunately the situation is the exact opposite – I don’t have such confidence. I continue to have mistrust in the Shin Bet’s head. A distrust that has grown with time.”
Netanyhau said, “While I was full with appreciation for the Shin Bet’s women and men, Bar’s removal is needed to rehabilitate the organization, to achieve all of our goals during the war, and prevent the next catastrophe.”
According to Israeli statistics, the war was started by Hamas’s surprise attack on October 7, 2023, which was widely regarded as Israel’s worst security failure. It led to Israel’s single deadliest day, with 1,200 deaths and 251 hostages taken to Gaza.
Shin Bet is currently part of an investigation into possible links between employees in Netanyahu’s office and Qatar, which has been mediating ceasefire talks between Hamas and Israel.
