Oregon Governor signed a Proclamation declaring March 10 “Abortion Provider Appreciation Day” to affirm her commitment to maintaining “access to abortion care throughout the state.”
In a press release, Governor Tina Kotek stated that “Here, in Oregon, we know abortion is healthcare, and providers can continue providing care without intimidation or interference.” Know that I will continue to support our Oregon-based providers and the Oregon patients forced to seek care in our state.
After the election in November, Kotek instructed to work with OHSU and replace Oregon’s 3-year supply of Mifepristone. This medication was approved over 20 years earlier by the Food and Drug Administration for miscarriage treatment and pregnancy termination.
She said that she will continue to work closely with OHA and providers to identify and mitigate threats from the federal government to reproductive health.
Oregon is the leader in the country for the most robust protection of access to reproductive health care, including abortion. Kotek said in a blog post that “in these times of uncertainty, I will safeguard our values.”
Oregon Senate Republicans responded to Kotek’s statement and criticised the governor for prioritizing “abortion providers’ appreciation” instead of fixing other problems in the state.
“Fix crime? Fix schools? Kotek instead declared a ‘Day of Appreciation for Abortion Providers,” wrote the group in X, with a picture attached.
Kotek will sign the Access to Reproductive Health Care law in 2023. The bill provides funding for community groups and clinic partners to provide access to reproductive health care.
Minors can also undergo sex-reassignment surgeries or have abortions without parental consent.
Justin Hwang said previously, the chairman of Oregon Republican Party. “HB2002 is what happens when progressive politicians, and their left-wing base, put radical ideology before common sense.”
This bill is a low point for Oregon. It’s incredibly bad for kids and parents. Imagine being a parent or father who learns that your child made a decision that will change their life without consenting or notifying you.
Kotek has prioritized reproductive equity since her days as Speaker of the Oregon House and even during her term as Governor.
Oregon Right to Life, a pro-life group that reacted to Governor Brown’s announcement of the abortion ban, said it would not support the bill.
You may have heard that it is Abortion Provider Appreciation Day, but we are not celebrating abortion. The organization said in a blog post that it was honoring a former abortionist who had chosen to leave the field.
Oregon Health Authority statistics show that of the 10,075 abortions performed in Oregon, 1661 were for patients living outside the state. This represents a 60% increase over the previous year.
