According to an email sent to staff on Friday, the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission has begun to onboard officials from Elon Musk’s Department of Government Efficiency.
In an email, the SEC staff was informed that the DOGE task force contacted the SEC, and they would be treated like staff in terms of network, systems, and data access. The email stated that the SEC was establishing a team of liaisons with DOGE with “intent to partnership”.
The staff email stated that “We will intend to partner and cooperate with the DOGE representatives, following the normal processes of ethics requirements, IT system security or training, and establishing the need to know, before granting them access to restricted systems and information.”
A spokesperson from the SEC confirmed it had begun to onboard DOGE Members. A spokesperson for DOGE did not respond immediately to a comment request.
The SEC, as the country’s leading market regulator, has access to vast amounts of confidential data, such as information on initial public offerings, supervisory examination records, and other nonpublic information from public companies, banks, and private funds.
SEC staff stated in the email that they expect DOGE officials will primarily contact the SEC liaison team. However, staff can be contacted directly. Staff were instructed to “respond politely” and collect information on any DOGE requests. However, “please do NOT provide any substantive information without first consulting SEC’s Liaison Team.”
