The chief of staff to House Speaker Mike Johnson, R-La. was arrested recently for driving under the influence.

Hayden Haynes, a young man from New York City, was arrested shortly before midnight Tuesday night for driving a car while intoxicated. Around an hour had passed since President Donald Trump finished his joint address to Congress.

Capitol Police (USCP), who did not name the suspect, had arrested the suspect.

A spokesperson for the USCP said that “a driver reversed into a vehicle parked last night at around 11:40 pm. We arrested the driver for DUI.”

According to LegiStorm, Haynes began working in Johnson’s Office in 2017. He became Chief of Staff in October 2023. He was Johnson’s campaign manager in 2016.

Haynes, a Louisiana native, graduated with a Bachelor’s Degree from Louisana Tech University in 2011. He later earned a Graduate degree from Gonzaga University.

According to a statement, Johnson’s Office said the Speaker still had “full confidence and trust” in Haynes’s “ability to run the Speaker’s Office.”

The statement stated, “The Speaker was aware of the incident which occurred last evening involving the Capitol Police and his Chief of staff. The Speaker and Hayden have worked together for almost a decade, and the Speaker trusted Hayden to be his chief of staff for his entire time in Congress.”

Hayden is a highly respected member of the staff and among the Members. The Speaker believes that Hayden can lead the office.

Johnson had appeared on Hannity before the arrest to praise Trump’s speech. He also said that Democrats disrupting the event “brought themselves and their parties shame”

Johnson stated, “I am sure that it will be received just as well by Republicans at home and in the crowd up there,” as it did when he was present. It was shameful. It was a real spectacle. They brought shame to themselves and their party.”

The American public is following the President’s speeches and appreciating them.
