The Hill reported that President Donald Trump signed an executive order on Tuesday directing declassification for FBI files related to the investigation into the potential Russian ties to his 2016 presidential campaign.

Will Scharf, White House staff secretary, said that the memorandum called for declassification “of all files related to Crossfire Hurricane Investigation”. He added that it was “long past time” for Americans to fully understand what is contained in these files.

Trump said as he signed that the memo was “total weaponization”. It’s a shame… but you can now see it for yourself.”

In July 2016, the FBI launched its Crossfire Hurricane probe to determine whether Trump’s supporters were in contact with Russian officials. The investigation was conducted before Robert Mueller was appointed special counsel.

The Hill reported in its report that Mueller did not find that Trump or any members of the Trump campaign conspired or coordinated with Russian officials to influence the 2016 presidential elections. However, he and the rest of his team refused to conclude as to whether or not the president obstructed justice.

Trump and his supporters have questioned the validity of the FBI investigation into his campaign for years. They claim that the FBI was motivated purely by political motives.
