Sen. Elizabeth Warren of Massachusetts said her applause was a “resistance” to President Donald Trump calling her “Pocahontas” during the joint session Congress address.
Warren was expressing the importance of the United States’ support for Ukraine following Trump’s controversial meeting last Friday with Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelenskyy at the Oval Office.
Warren said that she was “talking about the importance of American assistance for the Ukrainians who are fighting for democracy and fighting against an autocrat”.
Warren, who has been a staunch supporter of Ukraine since the Russian invasion in 2022, said that President Vladimir Putin does not limit his line to Ukraine.
Everyone needs to know: they are not going away. They have taken a big bite from Ukraine. Warren stated that they are coming to the rest of Europe and that we must fight them.
Warren said on Tuesday evening that she had “hit a cord” when she applauded the U.S.’s support of “Ukrainian Patriots” in President Donald Trump’s speech.

What did you make of the fact that President Trump called you by your name?
It was a real nerve-wracking moment when I praised the United States for its support of Ukrainian patriots. It’s well worth listening to the whole speech if that hit a chord with Trump.
The brutal and horrific conflict that has raged for years is not going to end. “The United States sent hundreds of millions of dollars in support of Ukraine’s defence with no security,” Trump stated during their joint address.
In response to loud applause by Warren and other Democrats, Trump claimed that “Pocahontas,” the nickname Trump gives Warren to ridicule her for claiming Native American ancestry, wanted “another five-year” war in Ukraine.
“Do you want to keep it going for another five years? ‘Yeah, yeah,’ you would say. Pocahontas says yes,” Trump said.

Warren is one of many Democrats to have criticized Trump following the Oval Office meeting last Friday with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.
“Donald Trump treats the destruction of democracy as a show – he throws Ukraine to the wolves and does a favor for Putin. This is dangerous and shameful. Many Senate Republicans, including myself, have been to Ukraine. Hope they will speak out. “Millions of lives are on the line,” Warren said on X.
Warren and Sen. Lindsey Graham, R-SC, have visited Zelenskyy in Kyiv in a bipartisan show of American support for Ukraine. Throughout the war, Warren has not waned in her support of funding for Ukraine.
Graham, however, said that after the Oval Office’s “complete and utter catastrophe,” he did not know “if it is possible to do business again with Zelenskyy.” Graham stated that Zelenskyy must resign, “send someone over with whom we can work with,” or “he needs to change”.
Zelenskyy has been asked to leave the White House following his public disagreements with Trump and Vice President JD Vance. This visit was meant to lead to the Ukraine-United States Mineral Resources Agreement.
Trump suspended all U.S. Military Aid to Ukraine on Monday. Zelenskyy sent Trump a letter in which he affirmed his commitment to peaceful negotiations and thanked the U.S.
