Russia said Friday that the issue of Iran’s nuclear program should be settled politically and diplomatically. It urged restraint from all parties.
After President Donald Trump threatened to bomb Iran without an agreement between Washington and Tehran over its nuclear program, Moscow offered to mediate the dispute.
“We believe that the problem of the Iranian nuclear dossier should be discussed and resolved only by political and diplomatic means.” Exclusively, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov told reporters.
“We believe that both parties must maintain a strict level of restraint and concentrate on the diplomatic effort when discussing any issue.”
Peskov stated, “You are aware that we’re currently working to restore our relations with the United States. But Iran is also our partner and ally with whom we enjoy very close, multifaceted relationships.”
His remarks highlighted the balance that Moscow was trying to strike at a time when tensions are rising over Iran’s nuclear activities.
Since the beginning of the conflict in Ukraine, Russia has strengthened its ties with Tehran and signed an agreement on strategic partnership with the Islamic Republic.
It is also working quickly to restore its relations with the Trump Administration, a move that has alarmed Ukraine and European nations who fear that Trump may make concessions to Moscow to end the conflict.
Trump claims that Iran is on the verge of building a nuclear weapon. Tehran denies such an intention and claims it only wants to use nuclear energy peacefully. Russia has said that it is entitled to do so.
