Texas Governor Sets Controversial Election Date for Critical House Seat Amid Democratic Outrage

Texas Republican Gov. Greg Abbott announced on Monday that a Special Election to fill the seat of the late Democrat U.S. Rep. Sylvester Turner won’t take place until November. He defended this timing by criticizing past Houston-area election results.

Abbott announced that the special election would be held on November 4, as Democrats accused him of delaying the elections after Turner’s death, which occurred on March 5, to help Republicans keep their razor-thin majority in the U.S. House. Abbott is the only person who can call for a Special Election.

The Governor said, “The delay will allow Harris County enough time to prepare for an important election.”

Harris County, which is where Houston is, has been under scrutiny for the past few years due to problems such as long lines, shortages of poll workers and ballots, and ballots not being counted on the day of an election.

Abbott stated in a press release that “safe and secure elections are crucial to the foundation of our State.” “Forcing Harris County, Texas to have this special election at a moment’s notice would be detrimental to the voters’ interests.”

The county has 5 million residents. Most of them are Latinos or Blacks. It is also the third most populous area in the United States.

Christian Menefee of Harris County, who is one of the candidates for Turner’s seat, has criticized the delay. Menefee called for a June election.

Menefee stated in a press release that it was “unconscionable” to leave almost 800,000 residents of this district without representation in Congress for the majority of the year. “We will go through hurricane season and budget battles and be attacked on Social Security and Medicaid without anyone at the table to fight for us.”

Menefee, along with Democratic U.S. House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries, had threatened to sue Abbott over the delay.

Teneshia Hudspeth said last week that Harris County was “fully ready” to conduct the election.

Abbott signed a law in 2023 that transferred responsibility for Harris County’s Elections Administrator to Hudspeth and other local officials. Hudspeth stated that “my office successfully conducted eight elections since then.”

Turner, the former mayor of Houston, died only a few weeks after he began his first term as a member of Congress.
