The Hill reported that Senate Majority leader John Thune (R-S.D.) wants his colleagues not to vote for a Democrat sponsored resolution that would overturn President Donald Trump’s 25 percent tariff on Canadian imports.

The Hill reports that Thune believes tariffs are needed to address the fentanyl epidemic in the United States. Ending the emergency order, he says, would encourage drug cartels into smuggling drugs across the Canadian border.

If we are serious about ending the fentanyl epidemic in America, then we must address the entire crisis. Thune told the Senate on Tuesday that we can’t solve the problem if we only attack a part of it.

The end of this emergency declaration will tell the cartels to focus on the northern border. I urge my colleagues to oppose the resolution and make sure that President Trump is equipped with the tools necessary to stop the flow of fentanyl in all directions.

The resolution was sponsored by Democrat Senators. The tariffs on Canada would be removed by Tim Kaine, Mark Warner, and Amy Klobuchar from Minnesota and Virginia.

Republican Senators Susan Collins from Maine, Thom Tillis from North Carolina, and Rand Paul from Kentucky have all criticized the tariffs on Canada and could be candidates for crossing party lines to vote with Democrats.

In a post to his Truth Social page, Trump encouraged Republicans to vote against this resolution. He wrote: “Senator Timkaine, who was my opponent in 2016 with Crooked Hilary, is trying to stop our crucial Tariffs for deadly Fentanyl imported from Canada. We are making progress in ending this Fentanyl Crisis. But Republicans in the Senate must vote to maintain the National Emergency so that we can complete the job and eliminate the scourge.

The Democrats’ weakness has allowed Fentanyl to get out of control. We have reversed this course quickly and strongly with the Republicans. There are major new developments. Do not let the Democrats win. It would be disastrous for the Republican Party and, more importantly, for the United States. “MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN AGENDA!”
