A Mexican Navy sailboat, with a total of 277 passengers on board, collided with the Brooklyn Bridge on Saturday evening. This tragic accident resulted in two fatalities and injuries to over a dozen others, creating a dramatic scene along the New York City waterfront, according to reliable sources.
This incident occurred at approximately 8:30 p.m., leading to at least 19 casualties, as reported by the New York Police Department. Four individuals suffered severe injuries, as stated by city officials during a late Saturday evening press briefing.
Mayor Eric Adams announced early Sunday that two individuals had lost their lives due to the collision. He further stated that two others remain in critical condition, as per his social media statement.
Reports indicate that the National Transportation Safety Board is dispatching a team to New York City to investigate the incident. This multi-disciplinary team, comprised of experts in nautical operations, marine and bridge engineering, and survival factors, arrived on Sunday to commence their investigation.
“According to NYPD Chief Wilson Aramboles, the captain, who was piloting the ship, lost power and mechanical function, which led to the ship crashing into the pillar of the bridge. The mast of the ship, where a few sailors were stationed, was directly hit, leading to their injuries.
The U.S. Coast Guard, which responded to the incident, described the vessel, the Cuauhtémoc, as a 297-foot-long training ship. All three of the tall ship’s masts were damaged as a result of the collision with the bridge.
Eyewitness accounts and cell phone footage from nearby onlookers captured the moment when the ship’s masts, adorned with lights, collided with the underbelly of the Brooklyn Bridge. As a consequence of the collision, several crew members were seen dangling from the masts.
Despite the severity of the collision, no one fell into the water, and officials believe that the bridge sustained no structural damage. The bridge was reopened to traffic shortly after midnight. Mayor Adams confirmed that preliminary inspections indicated no damage to the bridge structure.
Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum issued a statement on Sunday evening, expressing condolences to the families of the deceased and assuring that the Mexican government is coordinating with local U.S. authorities.
As we understand it today, the ship was leaving Pier 17 and was en route to Iceland. The NTSB arrived on site shortly after the crash and commenced an investigation into the cause. Preliminary findings suggest a mechanical issue with the sailboat, according to reliable sources.
Reiterating the significance of this event, which will no doubt leave an indelible mark on the minds of those affected and the broader community. We remind you of the importance of staying apprised of such events as the investigation continues.
