Trump Administration Blocks International Student Enrollments at Harvard

The Trump administration, on Thursday, reportedly took steps to increase pressure on Harvard University amidst allegations of ethnic discrimination and antisemitic harassment on campus.

Reports from The New York Times indicate that the government has decided to withdraw the certification of Harvard’s student and exchange visitor program. The decision, as conveyed via a letter from DHS Secretary Kristi Noem, follows previous threats by the administration to the international student program. These threats were contingent on Harvard’s failure to address a hostile learning environment allegedly imposed on Jewish students and a refusal to release a substantial list of documents related to international students and relevant university and public records.

On one side, Harvard University has steadfastly resisted these demands. A university spokesperson, Jason Newton, has stated that Harvard will not “surrender its independence.” He labeled the government’s move as “unlawful,” cautioning that such a retaliatory action undermines Harvard’s academic and research mission and could potentially inflict serious harm on the Harvard community and our country.

The pressure from the Trump administration on Harvard has been consistent and escalating. On Tuesday, it was announced that $60 million in grants to Harvard would be blocked. This brings the total of eliminated or withheld government funding from varied programs to Harvard in recent weeks to approximately $3 billion. Furthermore, three congressional committees have threatened to strip Harvard’s status as a nonprofit due to its connections with China.

This development follows earlier reports that Harvard graduate and billionaire Bill Ackman called for the Harvard board to resign. The significance of this should not be overlooked. The issue raises important questions about academic freedom, institutional accountability, and government oversight.
