The Trump administration, reports indicate, is making plans to house over 7,000 soldiers in government office buildings for an upcoming parade on the National Mall. This event, set to take place next month, will commemorate the Army’s 250th anniversary.
According to planning documents obtained by USA Today, the parade is scheduled to take place on June 14th, coincidentally marking President Donald Trump’s 79th birthday. Tanks, warplanes, and other military equipment are expected to be on display.
The proposed cost of the parade is initially projected to be around $30 million. However, reports suggest that this figure could potentially escalate to approximately $45 million. The significance of this should not be overlooked.
Around 7,500 soldiers and 120 military vehicles are anticipated to descend on the nation’s capital in the days leading up to the event. The military display will notably include 24 Abrams tanks and four Paladins, large, self-propelled howitzer cannons.
President Trump is expected to observe the spectacle from a viewing stand situated on Constitution Avenue, in proximity to the White House. The parade will conclude with a fireworks display at dusk.
There are, however, objections and concerns raised by Democrats and other critics of the President. The cost of the parade and its potential to politicize the Army, an institution traditionally free of political affiliation, has come under scrutiny. The fact that the parade coincides with President Trump’s birthday has further incited concern amongst Democrats in Congress, who perceive this as an attempt by the President to monopolize the event.
President Trump, in an interview with “Meet the Press”, defended the parade, stating it would celebrate not only Flag Day, but also “the greatest military in the world.” The cost of the event, according to the President, is “peanuts compared to the value of doing it.”
Patriotic displays are not new to President Trump. For example, in 2019, he hosted a “Salute to America” on the Fourth of July, which featured flyovers and tanks on the National Mall.
