Trump Stands Firm Against Nuclear Iran, Says Rep. Mike Turner

CBS News reported that Rep. Mike Turner stressed Sunday that President Donald Trump is still firmly committed to stopping Iran from acquiring a nuclear weapon as long as the negotiations continue.

Turner, R. Ohio, stated on CBS “Face the Nation” that the goal was “simple: we don’t have a nuclear Iran.” “Certainly, President Obama has been pushing for maximum pressure since his first term.”

Turner emphasized the administration’s efforts in confronting Iran’s nuclear aspirations, as well as its support of proxy terrorist groups throughout the Middle East. He said, “The president was very clear in his determination to stop the evil activities of Iran through its proxies.”

These remarks coincide with reported disagreements within the administration about how far to push Iran during ongoing negotiations. Some members of the national security team have indicated a willingness for a return to nuclear measures similar to those in place during the Obama-era deal from 2015, which focused on limits to enrichment and verification methods. Trump has always opposed this agreement.

Turner refused to demand a formal review when asked if any agreement would be presented before Congress.

“We need to know what the deal is.” “At the moment, we are just in ongoing negotiations,” he said. Congress has a part to play in the future. But I believe we must give them a chance to succeed.”

Turner addressed Mike Waltz, a former congressman, who was removed as national security advisor, and discussed the possibility of having discussions with Israeli officials regarding a possible military action against Iran. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has denied direct involvement in such talks.

Turner stated, “We didn’t know exactly what was happening.” “But… working directly and closely with world leaders, heads of state, is an important role… for the national security advisor.”

Turner praised Waltz for his new role as U.N. Ambassador, calling him committed and experienced. He also said that he was “glad” he would continue in the senior position. He addressed the question of National Security Council personnel, saying that staff should be loyal and competent to President Obama.

Turner added that Trump was “betrayed by National Security Council members during the first Trump Impeachment.”

Turner stated that Congress would continue to monitor future developments, including the progress of negotiations with Iran and the composition of the President’s National Security Team.
