GOP Rep. Mark Green to Step Down from Congress

Mark Green, R-Tenn., Chairman of the House Homeland Security Committee, has communicated to senior party leaders, including Speaker Mike Johnson, R-La., his intention to step down from Congress prematurely. This development has been reported by Punchbowl News on Monday.

Reports indicate that Green plans to submit his resignation following President Donald Trump’s signing into law of his funding legislation, named the One Big Beautiful Bill Act. Green has also shared with his Republican comrades that he has secured another employment opportunity, though details of this new role remain undisclosed at this time.

To understand this fully, we should note that Green had initially revealed his decision not to run for reelection in February 2024. Despite his initial stance, he was persuaded to reconsider his decision by GOP colleagues and President Trump, resulting in his victory at the polls last November. Green, a Tennessee native, first assumed his congressional role in 2018.

Green currently represents the 7th Congressional District in Tennessee, a territory known for its steadfast Republican leanings. The significance of his departure should not be overlooked as it raises important questions about the future representation of this solidly red district.

The facts, as we now know them, tell us that Representative Mark Green intends to vacate his seat in Congress, leaving behind a legacy of service and raising questions about the future of Tennessee’s 7th Congressional District.
