Iran has just thrown a match into the powder keg. Iran’s ambassador to the United Nations, Amir Saeid Iravani, declared on CBS News’ “Face the Nation” that Tehran will “never stop” enriching uranium. And guess what? He’s calling it an ‘inalienable right’ under the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty.
Iravani started his little speech by waving the NPT around like it’s a free pass to run a uranium enrichment party. He’s convinced that as a ‘responsible’ member of the NPT, Iran has ‘mutual rights’. That’s rich coming from a regime that’s anything but responsible!
He then goes on about their so-called ‘rights’ granted by the treaty: production of uranium and use of peaceful energy. These guys are enriching uranium faster than a liberal can say ‘climate change’.
When the host, Margaret Brennan, asked whether Iran plans to hit the reset button on enrichment, Iravani doubled down, saying, “I think that enrichment will never stop.” And then he dared to call it Iran’s ‘inalienable right’ that will always be exercised in a ‘peaceful manner’.
Iravani also addressed an outrageous accusation made by Iran’s Kayhan newspaper against International Atomic Energy Agency Director-General Rafael Grossi, calling him ‘an Israeli spy’. But of course, Iravani denied any official threats, even as he admitted their cooperation with the IAEA is on ice.
President Trump is keeping all options on the table, including military action, if Iran resumes uranium enrichment to a dangerous level. “Time will tell,” Trump said, “but I don’t believe that they’re going to go back into nuclear anytime soon.”
Finally, on the topic of U.S. proposals for direct talks, Iravani claimed Tehran is open to negotiations but flat-out rejected unconditional overtures. That’s like a kid who just stole a cookie from the jar saying he’s ready to negotiate after he finishes the cookie. Classic Iran!
The Iranian regime doesn’t want peace; they want power. And they’re willing to gamble with the safety of the world to get it.
