A series of Fourth of July events in Southern California have been either postponed or canceled due to the implementation of federal immigration raids, according to reports from KTLA.
The Gloria Molina Grand Park’s Summer Block Party, originally scheduled for this Friday in downtown Los Angeles, has been delayed indefinitely. This decision comes in light of recent events impacting part of Downtown Los Angeles and other situations affecting the region.
Cudahy, a city where 97% of the population identifies as Hispanic, has also postponed its Independence Day celebration, which was set for July 3. The postponement was announced by officials due to safety concerns. In addition, Huntington Park also chose to cancel its Independence Day celebrations scheduled for July 3, although no specific reason was provided.
East Los Angeles resident Jordan Escobar stated to KTLA his understanding of the cancellations. “I have family members and friends who are being affected by these injustices right now,” expressed Escobar. “So I understand why people are refraining from celebrating. I believe it’s important to voice our opinions.”
The County of Los Angeles Department of Parks and Recreation has also canceled this year’s East LA Rockin’ 4th of July. This development follows earlier reports that President Donald Trump called for ICE to halt immigration raids at specific employers like agriculture industries and hotels. Nonetheless, the focus on raids in Democratic-led sanctuary cities, including Los Angeles, has been emphasized.
We should note that this raises important questions about the intersection of immigration policy and public events. We will continue to follow these developments closely.
