A critical mental health service for LGBTQ youth is set to cease operations tomorrow. The specialized LGBTQ service within the 988 National Suicide and Crisis Lifeline will be discontinued as part of broader spending cuts implemented by the current administration.
According to reliable sources, this service has handled nearly 1.5 million crisis contacts since its inception three years ago. In April alone, counselors responded to approximately 70,000 calls, texts, and online messages, a record high. The Trevor Project, a prominent LGBTQ youth suicide prevention organization, has been responsible for managing about half of these queries.
Mark Henson, vice president of government affairs at The Trevor Project, expressed concern about the impact of this closure, stating, “When the line goes silent, there are a lot of open questions that we’re trying to prepare for.” The organization reports that federal funding has enabled them to double their capacity since the lifeline’s launch.
Recent data from The Trevor Project indicates 39% of LGBTQ individuals aged 13 to 24 in the United States have seriously contemplated suicide in the past year. This figure rises to 46% among transgender and nonbinary youth. Moreover, half of the LGBTQ young people seeking mental health care reported being unable to access it.
Adrian Shanker, a former senior adviser on LGBTQ health equity for the Department of Health and Human Services, described the closure as “an insult upon injury,” given the increased societal need for such services. Conversely, the administration’s decision aligns with its broader policy of reducing spending on diversity and inclusion programs.
The Trevor Project has initiated an “emergency lifeline campaign” to offset the loss of federal funding. The organization aims to hire additional crisis counselors in anticipation of increased demand for their services.
The situation remains fluid, and the full impact of this closure on LGBTQ youth mental health services is yet to be determined. This is a developing story that warrants continued attention.
