Brazil’s federal police executed search warrants on Friday at the residence of former President Jair Bolsonaro and the headquarters of his Liberal Party, according to statements from Bolsonaro’s press office.
The police, in their official statement, detailed that they carried out the warrants following orders from the country’s Supreme Court. However, the statement didn’t explicitly name former President Bolsonaro.
These developments follow earlier reports that President Donald Trump has urged Brazil to halt a legal case against Bolsonaro, alleging that his former ally has fallen victim to a “witch hunt.”
And to understand this fully, we should note that Bolsonaro, known for his cordial relationship with Trump during their respective tenures, is currently on trial in Brazil’s Supreme Court. He is accused of scheming a coup to prevent President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva from assuming office in January 2023.
