On Saturday, a noteworthy event unfolded within the halls of the Vatican. Pope Leo, in a possible bid to ameliorate strained ties between the Vatican and the Russian Orthodox Church, met with Metropolitan Anthony, a senior figure within the Russian ecclesiastical establishment, in light of the ongoing conflict in Ukraine.
The Vatican’s statement indicates that the Pope held an audience with Anthony, who chairs the department of external church relations, as well as with five other high-ranking clerics. Pope Leo, since his papal installation in May, has expressed fervent appeals for peace amidst international conflicts. The pontiff made it known earlier this month to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy that the Vatican is prepared to facilitate peace talks between Russia and Ukraine.
However, Russian officials have expressed their reservations, claiming that they do not see the Vatican as a legitimate venue for said talks, considering its location within a NATO member, Italy, a supporter of Ukraine. Pope Leo’s initial call with Russian President Vladimir Putin in early June saw the pontiff urging Russia to make strides towards the resolution of the conflict. The leader of Russia’s Orthodox Church, Patriarch Kirill, has shown unabated support for Russia’s actions in Ukraine.
While the meeting exhibits diplomatic efforts towards easing religious tension sparked by geopolitical conflict, the responses and attitudes of the parties involved suggest that there’s a challenging road ahead.
