Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem has been in dialogue with five Republican governors discussing the potential of constructing large-scale detention facilities for unauthorized immigrants, using as a model Florida’s facility known as “Alligator Alcatraz”.
During her Saturday news conference in Tampa, Florida, Secretary Noem commended Republican Gov. Ron DeSantis for his collaboration with the Department of Homeland Security in opening “Alligator Alcatraz,” a detention center located on a remote airstrip and encircled by the Everglades. According to reliable sources, Noem revealed that several other states are considering using Alligator Alcatraz as a blueprint, although she refrained from disclosing which states are involved.
Secretary Noem has not yet received consent from the governors to publicize their names, but assured that the discussions were progressing with announcements concerning the establishment of more detention facilities due soon. Her statements indicate the urgency of the situation, as she highlighted the necessity to double the capacity of detention beds to expedite the deportation process and sustain ongoing operations.
Spokespersons for the governors of South Carolina, Mississippi, and Texas expressed readiness to assist in the administration’s deportation efforts of unauthorized immigrants. However, they did not confirm whether they had been contacted directly. These developments follow earlier reports and official statements from the governors involved, expressing their strong support for the administration’s stance on immigration.
The detention facility named Alligator Alcatraz, which admitted its first detainees on July 1, possesses a capacity for 3,000 people. Former President Donald Trump, during his visit to the facility, indicated that due to the surrounding “miles of treacherous swampland,” the only viable exit route for detainees would be deportation.
The Homeland Security Secretary additionally called on Democratic governors to join their Republican counterparts in aligning with the administration’s illegal immigration policies. She praised the Republican governors she has spoken with, challenging Democratic governors to protect their states and help create safer communities.
To conclude, the issue of how to handle unauthorized immigration remains a contentious topic, with different states and political parties presenting varying perspectives.
