Reports from the Department of Homeland Security indicate that border encounters in June have reached unprecedented lows. According to Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem, Customs and Border Protection recorded just 25,243 nationwide encounters last month, marking the lowest figure in recent American history.
Secretary Noem states that this number represents a 12% decrease from the previous record set in February 2025 under the Trump administration. This becomes clear when we consider that apprehensions along the southwest border specifically have dropped to 6,070, a 15% decline from March of the same year.
The administration attributes these figures to their strict border policies. Secretary Noem claims, “The world is hearing our message: the border is closed to law breakers.” She further asserts that under President Trump’s leadership, Border Patrol agents have been “empowered to do their job once again.”
While these numbers represent a significant shift in border activity, the long-term implications and sustainability of these policies remain to be seen.
