Pentagon Fully Backs Air Force’s Cutting-Edge F-47 Fighter

The Pentagon has reportedly made a strategic decision to prioritize the Air Force’s F-47 fighter jet program over the Navy’s F/A-XX sixth-generation fighter. This development comes amid concerns about the capacity of federal defense contractors to manage multiple advanced aircraft production lines simultaneously.

According to reliable sources within the Defense Department, the fiscal year 2026 budget blueprint includes a substantial $3.4 billion request for the F-47 program. In contrast, only $74 million has been allocated to complete the design of the Navy’s stealth aircraft. Pentagon officials have indicated that this decision reflects a belief that the industrial base can only “handle going fast on one program at this time.”

The Navy’s F/A-XX project has been shrouded in secrecy, and its future has been uncertain for months. Earlier this year, reports suggested that a contract announcement was imminent, following Boeing’s successful bid for the F-47. However, no such announcement materialized.

Boeing and Northrop Grumman are reportedly under consideration for the F/A-XX contract. Lockheed Martin, initially viewed as a strong contender, was eliminated from the competition due to difficulties in meeting the Navy’s specific requirements, including an updated radar system and improved carrier landing capabilities.

It’s worth noting that Boeing executives have challenged the government’s assessment of the industry’s capabilities. Steve Parker, CEO of Boeing’s defense business, stated at the Paris Air Show, “Absolutely, we can do it. And so can the industrial base. And so can the engine manufacturers. I don’t see that as being an issue.”

This raises important questions about the future of naval aviation and the broader implications for America’s defense strategy. The significance of this decision should not be overlooked, as it may shape the balance of air power for decades to come.
