Pete Hegseth Ousts Defense Intelligence Chief Lt. Gen. Kruse

Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth has discharged Lt. Gen. Jeffrey Kruse, the director of the Defense Intelligence Agency (DIA). The dismissal is the most recent in a series of high-level rearrangements within the national security apparatus of the Trump administration, according to The Washington Post.

Pentagon officials have attributed their “loss of confidence” in Kruse as the primary reason for his dismissal. This term, “loss of confidence,” has been frequently employed by Hegseth in the recent removal of other high-ranking officers. This development follows a preliminary assessment released in June by the DIA regarding U.S. military strikes on Iran’s nuclear facilities. Contrary to statements made by Hegseth and President Donald Trump that the strikes had “obliterated” the facilities, the DIA’s report suggested that Tehran’s capabilities had been set back by mere months.

There is a growing number of dismissals under Hegseth’s leadership. Among those relieved of their duties are Joint Chiefs Chairman Gen. Charles “C.Q.” Brown, Chief of Naval Operations Adm. Lisa Franchetti, Coast Guard Commandant Adm. Linda Fagan, and Air Force Vice Chief of Staff Gen. James Slife. Air Force Chief of Staff Gen. David Allvin also tendered his resignation last week, reportedly under duress.

These shake-ups extend beyond the Pentagon. In recent months, President Trump and his allies have replaced numerous intelligence leaders, including the head of the National Security Agency and top officials at the National Intelligence Council. These changes have often followed intelligence assessments that contradicted the administration’s positions.

The Pentagon and DIA, as of this report, have not responded to requests for comment. The evidence suggests that these personnel changes signal a broader reshuffling within the national security apparatus. This raises important questions about the future direction of U.S. defense and intelligence agencies.
