Trump Issues Ultimatum to Pritzker: Clean Up Chicago or Face Action

President Donald Trump has issued a stern warning to Governor JB Pritzker, a Democrat, concerning the ongoing violence in Chicago. The ultimatum, delivered via a post on Truth Social, states that unless progress is made swiftly in curbing the violence, federal forces may be deployed to the city. According to the President’s statement, the impetus for this warning was a particularly violent weekend in Chicago, during which six people were killed and 24 others were injured in shootings.

This development follows Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson’s recent executive order, which prohibited local police from assisting federal authorities with civil immigration enforcement. The mayor’s directive also encompasses traffic stops and checkpoints during any potential surge in federal presence. This stance has been viewed as a protective measure for the constitutional rights of Chicago residents, with the possibility of federal or National Guard deployment looming.

The executive order also prevents Chicago police from disguising their identities by wearing face coverings, a practice adopted by some federal Immigration and Customs Enforcement officers since the Trump administration took office. The potential influx of federal law enforcement could begin as early as next week and last for approximately a month, according to two anonymous U.S. officials. These officials characterize the operation as a concerted effort to expand federal law enforcement presence in major Democrat-led cities.

Chicago, a city with a substantial migrant population, has historically maintained stringent rules against cooperating with federal immigration enforcement efforts. This stance has frequently put the city and state at odds with the Trump administration’s mass deportation agenda. Mayor Johnson’s recent order reinforces the city’s long-standing position and calls for Trump to abandon plans for an increased federal presence.

Mayor Johnson expressed strong opposition to federal intervention during a news conference, accusing President Trump of acting beyond the constitutional limits and using federal presence as a retaliatory measure against political opponents. The White House, in response, underscored that the possible deployment of federal agents aims to combat crime.

The conflict between federal and local authorities highlights deep divisions over the most effective approach to addressing crime and maintaining public safety. As the situation develops, the citizens of Chicago and the larger American public will undoubtedly watch closely to see how these tensions are resolved.
