Trump Mediation Could Bring Zelenskyy and Putin Face-to-Face Within 2 Weeks

A significant development may be unfolding in the ongoing conflict between Russia and Ukraine. According to German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, who was part of a European delegation meeting with President Donald Trump, there is a possibility that Russian President Vladimir Putin and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy could meet within the next two weeks.

President Trump has initiated arrangements for face-to-face discussions between the Russian and Ukrainian leaders. This comes after a series of high-level meetings and phone calls involving Trump, Putin, Zelenskyy, and European officials. The White House confirms that Trump spoke with Putin by phone on Monday, during a break in his meetings with Zelenskyy and European leaders.

President Trump has proposed a two-step process: first, a meeting between Putin and Zelenskyy, followed by a trilateral discussion including himself. The American president described this as “a very good, early step for a War that has been going on for almost four years.” It’s important to note that while the Kremlin has confirmed the conversation with Trump, it remains unclear whether Putin has fully agreed to participate in talks with both Trump and Zelenskyy present.

These developments come just days after Trump hosted Putin for a summit in Alaska, where discussions reportedly tilted towards Putin’s demands for Ukrainian concessions over seized territories. Currently, Russia controls approximately one-fifth of Ukrainian territory.

President Trump has announced support for European security guarantees for Ukraine. However, he stopped short of committing U.S. troops to a collective effort. Instead, he described a “NATO-like” security presence, with details to be determined in collaboration with EU leaders.

The Russian Foreign Ministry has rejected the idea of a NATO peacekeeping force in Ukraine, warning of potential escalation. Meanwhile, European leaders are seeking concrete details about U.S. involvement in building security guarantees for Ukraine.

These developments represent a potential shift in the approach to resolving the conflict, which has been ongoing since Russia annexed Crimea in 2014 and its broader invasion in 2022. However, many questions remain unanswered, including the specifics of any proposed ceasefire or territorial concessions.

As this situation continues to unfold, it will be crucial for all parties involved to maintain open lines of communication and work towards a lasting peace. The coming weeks may prove pivotal in determining the future course of this conflict and its impact on regional and global stability.
