Uganda has consented to an agreement with the United States, accepting the responsibility to receive deported migrants under certain conditions. As stated by Ugandan officials, the deportees should not have criminal records and should not be unaccompanied minors.
The Ugandan foreign affairs ministry, in a statement released on Thursday, said that “the two parties are working out the detailed modalities on how the agreement shall be implemented.” Uganda has also indicated a preference for the deportees to be of African nationalities.
This development follows earlier reports that the Trump administration, according to CBS News, citing U.S. government documents, had reached agreements with Uganda and Honduras. These agreements are part of a broader effort to persuade countries worldwide to assist in its crackdown on illegal immigration.

While the clarity regarding the signing of the agreement remains questionable, the ministry statement affirmed that the agreement had been “concluded.”
