A gunman opened fire at a U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) facility in Dallas on Wednesday, resulting in the death of one detainee, injuries to two others, and the gunman himself succumbing to a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
The assailant, armed with a rifle, launched his attack from a nearby rooftop, authorities reveal. Dallas Police Chief Daniel Comeaux reported that an initial call suggested four individuals had been shot, with two fatalities. Later verification confirmed the death of one detainee and the shooter.
The FBI, during a press conference, revealed that ‘anti-ICE’ messages were discovered on ammunition at the crime scene. The Bureau is treating the incident as a targeted act of violence. This development follows earlier reports of public, targeted killings, including the incident where conservative leader Charlie Kirk was shot dead just two weeks ago.

This incident has sparked a heated debate on the politically charged issue of immigration enforcement. Senator Ted Cruz, R-Texas, sternly condemned what he labeled as dangerous, politically motivated rhetoric against ICE and Customs and Border Protection (CBP). Cruz stressed the importance of civility in discourse and the need for political debates to occur within the confines of Congress, not through rhetoric that potentially incites violence.
Department of Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem echoed a similar sentiment, warning that inflammatory rhetoric towards law enforcement could have deadly consequences. She urged an end to the violence and dehumanization against those enforcing the law.”\
Texas GOP Gov. Greg Abbott labeled the incident an ‘assassination’ plot and reaffirmed Texas’s support for ICE. Vice President JD Vance, along with Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton, also voiced their support for law enforcement and called for an end to such violence.
The Dallas ICE facility, where the incident occurred, is a frequent site for protests. The facility has a capacity to house anywhere from a few dozen to about 100 detainees at a time.
This raises important questions about the safety and security of such facilities, particularly in light of recent violent incidents targeting law enforcement. DHS spokeswoman Tricia McLaughlin noted that this shooting follows a viable bomb threat at the same location just a month ago.
Despite the troubling nature of this incident, we must continue to strive for understanding, open dialogue, and mutual respect.
