Governor Kathy Hochul, along with several migrant advocacy groups, has reported that a series of raids conducted by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, or ICE, resulted in the detention of dozens of individuals in Cato and Fulton, New York.
Governor Hochul expressed profound concern about the morning raids, where more than forty adults were taken into custody. Included in this group were the parents of at least a dozen children, who, in the governor’s words, risked ‘returning from school to an empty house.’
Under the Trump administration, ICE has been empowered with increased funding and broader authority to carry out such operations. President Trump has consistently expressed intentions to deport only ‘the worst of the worst’ criminals, yet figures from ICE have indicated an uptick in the detainment of non-criminals.

A migrant advocacy group, Rural & Migrant Ministry, has reported that over seventy individuals were arrested following an ICE raid at Nutrition Bar Confectioners, a nutrition bar factory positioned in the village of Cato. This figure is corroborated by The New York Times, which suggests this may be one of the most substantial workplace raids in New York since the inception of President Trump’s immigration crackdown.
The owner of Nutrition Bar Confectioners, Mark Schmidt, has asserted that all of his employees possessed legal documentation for employment within the United States, labeling the operation as an ‘overkill,’ while an ICE spokesperson referred to the actions as ‘court-authorized enforcement.’
The exact details regarding the raid in Fulton, as mentioned by Governor Hochul, remain unclear. However, the governor expressed her belief that such actions do not contribute to enhancing the safety of New York. She condemned the impact of these raids on hard-working families striving to establish a life in the state.
