Terror at the Waterfront: 3 Dead, 8 Hurt in North Carolina Bar Shooting

Three individuals have tragically lost their lives, and at least eight others have been reported injured following a mass shooting in Southport, North Carolina, on Saturday night, according to local authorities.

The gunfire reportedly erupted from a boat sailing past the American Fish Company, a popular waterfront bar and restaurant situated along the Cape Fear River. The suspected assailant halted the boat in proximity to the riverside establishment at approximately 9:30 p.m. Eastern Time, opening fire into a crowd of unsuspecting patrons.

Following the incident, the shooter fled from the scene via boat, heading towards Oak Island, another coastal town not far from Southport. Within the hour, a person fitting the description given of the shooter was located and detained by the U.S. Coast Guard at a public boat ramp in Oak Island. The individual is currently in the custody of the Oak Island Police Department and will subsequently be turned over to the Southport Police for further questioning.

This development follows earlier reports that the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation is assisting Southport police with the ongoing investigation. Southport officials do not believe there is any lingering threat to the public following the arrest.

Authorities have yet to publicly identify the person of interest or any of the victims involved in the incident. An update on the investigation is expected to be provided at a news conference Sunday morning.
