Trump Orders Troops Into Portland Streets, Citing ‘Domestic Terrorism’

President Trump declared on Saturday that he will deploy troops to Portland, Oregon, with the ultimate goal of confronting what he describes as ‘domestic terrorists’, as he broadens his disputed deployments to other U.S. cities.

The announcement was disseminated via social media, in which he instructed the Department of Defense to “supply all necessary troops to protect war-ravaged Portland”. The President justified this decision as a measure to defend U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement facilities, which he portrays as being “under assault from Antifa, and other domestic terrorists.”

However, reports indicate that the White House has not revealed further details about this announcement, such as a timeline for the deployment or the specific troops that would be involved. It has been reported that the President has previously threatened to dispatch the National Guard into Chicago without any follow-up action. Meanwhile, a deployment in Memphis, Tennessee, is expected to involve only about 150 troops, significantly fewer than were sent to Washington D.C. for Trump’s crackdown or in Los Angeles in response to immigration protests.

The significance becomes clear when we consider the escalating tensions since the assassination of conservative activist Charlie Kirk. The Republican president has amplified his efforts to challenge what he labels the ‘radical left’, attributing the country’s issues to political violence.

Turning now to the broader implications, we see that the ICE facility in Portland has been a frequent focal point of demonstrations, occasionally resulting in violent confrontations. Federal agents have reported injuries, and several protestors have been charged with assault. The Department of Homeland Security has characterized the erection of a guillotine by protesters earlier this month as “unhinged behavior.”

Earlier in September, the President described the living conditions in Portland as “like living in hell” and mentioned that he was contemplating sending in federal troops, as he has recently threatened to do to quell crime in other cities, including Chicago and Baltimore.

However, this decision has not been without its detractors. Portland’s mayor, Keith Wilson, has publicly stated that he has not asked for, nor does he require, federal intervention, underlining that his city has maintained the freedom of expression while “addressing occasional violence and property destruction.”

Reports from Tennessee indicate that Memphis is preparing for an influx of National Guard troops. On Friday, Republican Gov. Bill Lee, who has been coordinating the operation, stated that these troops will form part of a surge of resources to combat crime in the city.
