Mikalai Statkevich, a prominent Belarusian opposition leader, has vanished after refusing deportation in a recent prisoner release brokered by the United States. The 69-year-old politician was among 52 political prisoners pardoned by President Alexander Lukashenko last month.
Statkevich, moments before crossing into freedom, forcibly exited the bus transporting the released prisoners. Eyewitness accounts suggest he declared his refusal to leave his homeland in what he termed a “forced deportation.” Surveillance footage later captured masked security forces escorting Statkevich back into Belarus.
Statkevich, a former presidential candidate and long-time critic of Lukashenko’s regime, has a history of imprisonment for his political activities. His wife, Maryna Adamovich, has been unable to confirm his whereabouts or condition since the incident. Belarusian authorities have not responded to inquiries about Statkevich’s status.

Belarus, under Lukashenko’s 30-year rule, has faced international criticism for its human rights record. The United Nations has expressed concern, with experts describing Statkevich as a potential victim of enforced disappearance and arbitrary detention.
This development follows earlier reports of a U.S.-brokered deal that led to the prisoner release and easing of sanctions on Belarus’s national airline. However, human rights organizations estimate that approximately 1,200 political prisoners remain in custody in Belarus.
Supporters of the Belarusian government maintain that Statkevich violated the terms of his release. Opposition figures, including exiled leader Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya, argue that the prisoner exchange amounts to trading political prisoners “like commodities.”
Statkevich’s actions echo those of other Belarusian dissidents who have resisted forced exile, raising questions about the nature of political freedom in the country and the international community’s approach to dealing with authoritarian regimes.
