On Thursday night, a massive explosion rocked the Chevron refinery in El Segundo, California – and the left’s response has been, predictably, inadequate.
Let’s say, hypothetically, this wasn’t just any refinery. This is, factually speaking, the largest producing oil refinery on the West Coast, processing 276,000 barrels of crude oil daily. And here’s where the logic becomes important: This facility, constructed in 1911, represents a critical piece of America’s energy infrastructure that the environmental left constantly tries to diminish.
At approximately 10:00 PM, an explosion triggered a significant fire within the facility. Resident reports described it as “feeling like a small earthquake,” and this is where things get interesting.

The response was, I’ll admit, relatively efficient. The refinery’s own fire department, stationed merely a quarter mile from the gates, responded immediately. The El Segundo Fire Department and the LA County Fire Department provided additional support. This is, by the way, exactly how private-public partnerships should function.
But here’s the critical point that the mainstream media won’t emphasize: Despite the scale of this incident, the free market’s built-in safety mechanisms worked precisely as intended. Let me explain:
1. No injuries were reported
2. The fire was contained to one specific area
3. No evacuations were required
4. LAX operations continued uninterrupted
5. Air quality remained stable
LA County Supervisor Holly Mitchell stated, “It has been contained and there is no cause for alarm for El Segundo or the surrounding areas.” The South Coast Air Quality Management District confirmed no elevated levels of toxins, though they’re monitoring the situation.
Here’s where the left’s narrative completely falls apart. While they’ll undoubtedly use this incident to push their anti-fossil fuel agenda, let’s examine the facts: This refinery has operated safely for over 110 years, providing essential energy infrastructure for the entire West Coast. One incident, while serious, doesn’t negate a century of reliable service.
Division Chief Casey Snow reported that while gasoline and diesel continued burning, the fire would either burn itself out or be extinguished through controlled measures. This is, quite literally, how these situations are supposed to be handled.
The logical conclusion here is inescapable: Despite this significant industrial incident, the systems, protocols, and response mechanisms worked exactly as designed. This isn’t a failure of fossil fuel infrastructure; it’s a testament to the robust safety systems developed by private industry.
So when the environmental left inevitably tries to use this incident to push their green agenda, remember: This facility processes over a quarter-million barrels of oil daily, providing essential energy resources to millions of Californians. One incident, professionally contained and managed, doesn’t justify dismantling our entire energy infrastructure.
