The systematic abuse of America’s commercial driver licensing system by states like California has created an unprecedented safety crisis on our nation’s highways. Facts don’t care about feelings, and the facts here are clear: nearly 97% of non-domiciled commercial truck drivers currently operating on American roads should not be behind the wheel.
A comprehensive Department of Transportation audit has exposed shocking negligence in at least six states that have deliberately ignored federal CDL standards. These requirements exist for two fundamental reasons: to protect American lives and preserve American jobs. Instead, liberal-run states have transformed their DMVs into de facto sanctuaries for unqualified foreign drivers, many of whom cannot even read or speak basic English – a critical safety requirement for operating commercial vehicles.
The human cost of this ideologically-driven negligence is staggering. This year alone, at least 12 Americans, including two children, have lost their lives in accidents involving improperly licensed non-domiciled drivers. In a particularly tragic incident this August, three Americans were killed when an illegal alien with a California-issued CDL attempted an illegal U-turn.
The Trump administration, recognizing this clear and present danger, has taken immediate executive action through Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy to halt states’ ability to issue non-domiciled CDLs to unqualified foreign drivers. The newly introduced Non-Domiciled CDL Integrity Act (H.R. 5688) would codify these protections into permanent law.
This isn’t about xenophobia – it’s about basic safety and adherence to existing federal standards. The legislation specifically targets states that have been issuing commercial licenses to individuals with expired documents, pending asylum claims, and even those lacking proper identification. In some egregious cases, licenses have been issued without even printing the driver’s name.
The logical conclusion is inescapable: American lives are being needlessly endangered by state governments that prioritize progressive political agendas over public safety. This new legislation would establish permanent safeguards ensuring that only properly vetted, qualified individuals can operate commercial vehicles on American roads.
For those concerned about the trucking industry, consider this: protecting American roads means protecting American jobs. Qualified domestic drivers who have invested time and resources into proper training and certification deserve protection from this unfair and dangerous competition.
The choice is clear: we can either continue allowing states to undermine federal safety standards and put lives at risk, or we can restore integrity to the commercial licensing process. The Non-Domiciled CDL Integrity Act represents a logical, fact-based approach to addressing this critical public safety issue.
