Cable News Host Says Half Her Job Is Debunking Conservative Conspiracy Theories

Let’s get one thing straight: the mainstream media’s condescension toward conservatives has reached truly remarkable levels of self-parody.

Cable news anchor Abby Phillip claimed this week that part of her job involves explaining facts to conservatives because they allegedly live in a “completely different information world” and lack access to the truth. The stunning display of elitism came during an appearance on Joy Reid’s new show, where Phillip expounded on her self-appointed role as truth-teller to the supposedly benighted conservative masses.

“Conservatives are living in a completely different information world than liberals,” Phillip declared, with Reid nodding along enthusiastically. “And breaking that down needs to be done. Because when you don’t ever even hear the facts, it’s hard to even know that you’re wrong.”

The irony here is so thick you could cut it with a knife.

Phillip continued, explaining that half her job consists of tracking conservative “conspiracy theories” so she can debunk them on air. “Because it happens a lot where people don’t even know that what they’re saying or what they’ve seen and believe is not true,” she said, positioning herself as the arbiter of truth for confused conservatives who stumble into her broadcasts.

Here is the problem with this entire narrative: Phillip was making these claims while sitting across from Joy Reid, a host who spent considerable time suggesting that President Donald Trump’s assassination attempt in Butler, Pennsylvania, had been staged for a photo opportunity. Reid also claimed that President Joe Biden “surviving COVID” was comparable to Trump rallying supporters immediately after being shot in the ear. These are not the musings of someone deeply concerned with factual accuracy.

The lack of self-awareness is staggering. Phillip hosts a program where conservative commentator Scott Jennings regularly dismantles the arguments of his left-wing co-panelists with basic facts and logical reasoning. Yet somehow, Phillip has convinced herself that she is the one correcting misinformation rather than perpetuating it.

This represents a broader problem within legacy media: the assumption that conservatives are simply uninformed liberals who have not yet been exposed to the “correct” information. This Jane Goodall approach to political opponents treats half the country as specimens to be studied and enlightened rather than rational adults capable of evaluating evidence and reaching different conclusions.

The reality is that conservatives have access to the same information as everyone else. They simply do not accept the mainstream media’s framing, narratives, and conclusions as gospel truth. When Phillip talks about debunking conspiracy theories, what she often means is dismissing legitimate questions about government overreach, media bias, or progressive policy failures.

Consider the track record: the media spent years promoting the Russia collusion narrative, dismissed the Hunter Biden laptop story as Russian disinformation, insisted that COVID-19 could not have originated from a lab leak, and claimed that inflation was transitory. Conservatives who questioned these narratives were labeled conspiracy theorists, only to be vindicated later.

The fundamental issue is not that conservatives lack access to facts. It is that they refuse to accept the media’s interpretation of those facts as definitive. That is not ignorance. That is critical thinking.

Phillip’s comments reveal the core assumption driving much of mainstream journalism: that disagreement with progressive orthodoxy stems from ignorance rather than principle. This is intellectually lazy and politically counterproductive.

If Phillip truly wanted to bridge the information divide, she might start by acknowledging her own biases and treating conservative viewpoints with genuine intellectual respect rather than condescending pity. But that would require recognizing that conservatives might actually have valid points, and clearly, that possibility has not occurred to her.
