Progressive Churches Host Drag Shows as Christmas Celebrations in Latest Cultural Assault

The facts are straightforward and deeply troubling. Multiple progressive churches across America have decided that traditional Christmas celebrations are insufficient and have instead opted to host drag-themed performances reimagining the nativity story.

Foothills Unitarian Church in Fort Collins, Colorado, recently hosted its third annual “A Drag Christmas Spectacular” on December 19 and 20. The 90-minute performance bills itself as “a joyful, irreverent reimagining of the nativity story that celebrates queer joy, chosen family, and the power of love and acceptance.” The promotional materials promise that “magical Queers will slay their way to Bethlehem.”

Let us be clear about what is happening here. These institutions are not simply adding alternative programming alongside traditional services. They are actively mocking and distorting the foundational story of Christianity under the guise of inclusivity and acceptance.

Reverend Sean Neil-Barron, who identifies as queer and serves as minister at Foothills Unitarian, told media outlets that he created the event two years ago in response to what he characterized as anti-LGBTQ legislation introduced across the country. This reveals the actual motivation behind these performances. They are not about celebrating Christmas or even about worship. They are political statements masquerading as religious services.

The event website acknowledges that the show contains adult themes and recommends it for ages 16 and older, which raises an obvious question: why are churches hosting performances with adult content that they themselves admit are inappropriate for children? The answer is equally obvious. This has nothing to do with faith and everything to do with advancing a particular ideological agenda.

Similar events are occurring in Washington state, demonstrating that this is not an isolated incident but rather part of a broader cultural movement within progressive religious institutions.

The irony is palpable. These same progressive voices regularly lecture Americans about respecting religious traditions and cultural sensitivities. Yet when it comes to Christianity, particularly during its most sacred celebrations, mockery and irreverence are not only acceptable but celebrated.

Traditional Christians who object to these performances are predictably labeled as bigots or accused of lacking compassion. This is the standard playbook. Anyone who suggests that perhaps churches should focus on the actual religious significance of Christmas rather than drag performances is immediately cast as the villain.

The reality is that Americans have every right to celebrate however they choose. Adults can attend whatever performances they wish. However, when institutions that identify as churches deliberately distort religious narratives for political purposes, they forfeit any claim to religious authority or moral credibility.

This is not about denying anyone’s identity or rights. This is about maintaining basic respect for religious traditions that millions of Americans hold sacred. There are 364 other days of the year for political activism. Christmas celebrates the birth of Christ. That story does not require a drag performance to make it relevant or meaningful.

The broader war on Christmas continues unabated, now with some religious institutions serving as willing participants in their own irrelevance.
