When Reality Comes Knocking in New England
Maine just got a taste of something the southern border states have been dealing with for years. ICE swept through the Pine Tree State on Tuesday, nabbing more than 50 individuals as part of what they’re calling Operation Catch of the Day. And before anyone clutches their pearls about the name, maybe focus on what these folks were actually arrested for.
Child rape. Drug trafficking. Sexual assault. DUIs.
You know what’s interesting? The critics always want to talk about enforcement tactics, but they get real quiet when you mention the rap sheets. ICE Deputy Assistant Director Patricia Hyde laid it out plain as day. There are roughly 1,400 targets in Maine alone. That’s not a typo. Fourteen hundred people who shouldn’t be here, many of whom have committed serious crimes against Americans.
This isn’t some abstract policy debate anymore. It’s happening in communities that probably thought they were insulated from the consequences of open border policies. Turns out geography doesn’t protect you from bad policy.
The Predictable Outrage Machine
Of course, we’re already hearing the usual complaints. Some police chiefs in Minnesota are alleging racial profiling, claiming ICE agents targeted U.S. citizens, including off-duty officers. Let’s be clear about something. If those allegations are true and proper protocol wasn’t followed, that’s a problem that needs fixing. Nobody’s arguing otherwise.
But here’s what drives people crazy. The same folks who demand we dismantle immigration enforcement entirely are the first to weaponize any allegation, verified or not, to shut down operations that are literally removing child rapists from American communities. It’s exhausting.
We can walk and chew gum at the same time. We can demand professional conduct from law enforcement while also celebrating when dangerous criminals get removed from our streets. These aren’t competing values.
What Limited Government Actually Means
There’s this weird misconception that conservative support for limited government means we oppose all enforcement. That’s not how this works. Limited government doesn’t mean absent government. It means government focused on its core constitutional responsibilities. And you know what’s pretty high on that list? Protecting citizens and enforcing the laws on the books.
Congress passed immigration laws. Presidents from both parties, until recently, enforced them with varying degrees of seriousness. The Trump administration is simply doing what the executive branch is supposed to do. Enforce the law. Revolutionary concept, right?
The free market works brilliantly for most things, but national sovereignty isn’t one of them. You can’t outsource border security to market forces. You can’t negotiate with cartels using supply and demand curves. Some things require the firm hand of government, and immigration enforcement is absolutely one of them.
The Cultural Reckoning Nobody Wanted to Have
Here’s the uncomfortable truth that Operation Catch of the Day forces into the light. For years, certain politicians and activists sold Americans a fantasy. They said we could essentially ignore immigration law, that enforcement was somehow cruel or un-American, that sanctuary policies made everyone safer.
Maine is learning what happens when reality crashes into ideology. When you don’t enforce immigration law, you’re not being compassionate. You’re being reckless. You’re telling criminals there are places they can hide, communities they can victimize, and nobody will come looking.
Traditional social principles aren’t about being mean. They’re about maintaining order, protecting the vulnerable, and ensuring communities can thrive. You can’t have strong families and safe neighborhoods when you refuse to remove people who rape children. It’s that simple.
Looking Forward
The Trump administration isn’t being subtle about this. They’re conducting operations with names like Catch of the Day and making sure reporters are there to document it. Some people hate the showmanship. I think it’s about time someone treated this issue with the seriousness it deserves while also not apologizing for doing the right thing.
Will there be more operations like this? Absolutely. Should there be? Without question. Every state has its share of these targets. Every community deserves protection.
The real question is whether Americans will continue tolerating politicians who prioritize illegal immigrants over their own citizens. Maine’s getting its answer this week. The rest of the country should pay attention.
