Here are the facts: Republican lawmakers are demanding the Trump administration take immediate action to reverse Obama-Biden era regulations that transformed abortion pills into mail-order commodities, and the data vindicates their concerns completely.
During a Senate Health, Education, Labor, and Pension Committee hearing Wednesday, Senator Bill Cassidy of Louisiana laid out the stark reality. Abortions have not decreased following the Dobbs decision that overturned Roe v. Wade. They have increased. The primary driver? Mail-order abortion drugs that circumvent state protections for unborn life.
“I urge Secretary Kennedy and Commissioner Makary to complete the safety review of mifepristone that they both promised us during their confirmation hearings,” Cassidy stated. “At an absolute minimum, the previous in-person safeguards should be restored, and it should be done immediately.”
This is not complicated. The Biden administration systematically dismantled safety protocols requiring in-person medical consultations before dispensing drugs that terminate pregnancies. The result has been predictable: a surge in chemical abortions facilitated through the mail, with women left alone to deliver dead babies without medical supervision.
Louisiana Attorney General Liz Murrill testified that abortions have risen in her state despite Louisiana’s pro-life laws. “Abortions have tragically increased in Louisiana and other pro-life states since Dobbs because of the Biden administration’s actions,” Murrill explained. “Shield laws in some states protect providers from liability and effectively nullify laws in our states.”
This represents federal overreach enabling state nullification of duly enacted laws. Blue states have erected legal shields protecting abortion providers who mail pills into red states where such practices violate state law. This is not federalism. This is anarchism with a progressive veneer.
The medical realities are disturbing. Medication abortions involve two drugs: mifepristone and misoprostol. Mifepristone cuts off nutrients to the unborn child, effectively starving the baby to death. Misoprostol then induces contractions to expel the deceased child. Women are left to manage this process alone, often delivering fully formed dead babies in their bathrooms.
Dr. Monique Wubbenhorst attempted to describe these realities during the hearing before Democrat Senator Patty Murray cut her off. Murray, who called the entire hearing a “sham,” apparently found the medical facts too inconvenient for public consumption. Truth has a way of undermining narratives.
Murray did cite the FDA’s recent approval of another generic abortion pill in September, a decision that shocked pro-life advocates and prompted Senator Josh Hawley of Missouri to declare he had lost complete faith in the agency. The FDA under Biden became an ideological instrument rather than a scientific one.
Senator Lindsey Graham of South Carolina, among President Trump’s closest Senate allies, led an afternoon press conference demanding the administration scrap the mail-order regulations entirely. “The pro-life community is not asking too much of Republicans,” Graham stated.
He is correct. The pro-life community is asking for basic consistency. Republicans campaigned on protecting unborn life. The Supreme Court returned this issue to the states. State legislatures passed protections. The Biden administration then systematically undermined those protections through regulatory manipulation.
The Trump administration now faces a straightforward choice: restore the in-person safeguards that existed before Biden’s regulatory changes, or allow the federal bureaucracy to continue nullifying state law through administrative fiat.
Secretary Kennedy and Commissioner Makary promised safety reviews during their confirmation hearings. Republicans are not asking for new policy innovations. They are demanding that existing promises be kept and that basic medical safeguards be restored.
The data demonstrates that mail-order abortion pills have increased abortions and endangered women. The solution is obvious. The only question is whether the Trump administration will act with the urgency this crisis demands.
