Here’s what we know. Brad Bondi is a defense attorney who happens to be good at his job. He also happens to be the brother of Attorney General Pam Bondi. And now two Democratic lawmakers want an investigation because his clients have been winning cases since his sister took over the Justice Department.
Sen. Adam Schiff and Rep. Dave Min sent a letter to the DOJ’s inspector general asking for a probe into what they’re calling a “troubling pattern” of favorable outcomes. They want to know if Pam Bondi properly recused herself or if she somehow influenced cases where her brother represented defendants. The timing, they suggest, is just too convenient.
Brad Bondi works at Paul Hastings, a major law firm where defense attorneys charge the kind of hourly rates that would make your eyes water. Since his sister became AG, he’s secured several voluntary dismissals and settlements for his clients. He even posted about these “remarkable victories” on LinkedIn, which is now being cited as evidence of something nefarious.
But let’s pump the brakes here. Are we really supposed to believe that every time a competent lawyer wins a case, there must be corruption involved? Defense attorneys win cases all the time. That’s literally their job. They’re supposed to get favorable outcomes for their clients. It’s what people pay them obscene amounts of money to do.
The Democrats’ letter raises concerns about DOJ officials failing to ensure “the independence of internal accountability mechanisms.” That’s bureaucratic speak for suggesting the game is rigged. Maybe it is. Maybe Brad Bondi is just that good. Or maybe, and here’s a wild thought, the cases themselves had merit and would have been dismissed or settled regardless of who was running the Justice Department.
You know what’s interesting about this whole thing? The assumption that family connections automatically equal corruption. Sure, it looks bad. Optics matter in politics and government. But looking bad and being bad are two different things. We live in a country where people are innocent until proven guilty, where the burden of proof matters, where evidence trumps suspicion.
Recusal is a serious matter. If Pam Bondi should have recused herself from cases involving her brother’s clients and didn’t, that’s a problem worth investigating. But if she did recuse herself properly and Brad Bondi’s clients still won their cases, then what exactly are we talking about here? Are we saying defense attorneys with family members in government shouldn’t be allowed to practice law?
The timing of this letter is worth noting too. Democrats have been looking for ways to challenge this administration at every turn. That’s politics. That’s what opposition parties do. But crying wolf over every perceived slight or suspicious coincidence cheapens legitimate oversight. Congress has real investigative powers that should be used when there’s actual evidence of wrongdoing, not just because something feels off.
Here’s the thing about the legal profession. Lawyers with connections often get hired because clients think those connections might help. Sometimes they do help, in perfectly legal ways like understanding how an agency thinks or knowing the right procedural moves. Sometimes those connections mean absolutely nothing because the law is the law and facts are facts.
Brad Bondi’s success could mean a dozen different things. It could mean he’s an exceptional attorney who knows federal law inside and out. It could mean his clients had strong cases that any competent lawyer would have won. It could mean prosecutors looked at the evidence and decided they couldn’t win at trial. Or yes, it could mean something improper happened.
That’s why we have inspectors general. Let them investigate if there’s smoke worth chasing. But let’s not pretend that every legal victory by a well-connected attorney is proof of corruption. Sometimes good lawyers just win cases. Sometimes justice actually works the way it’s supposed to. And sometimes, Democrats see patterns where there’s just noise.
