Here’s what you need to understand about Eric Swalwell. This isn’t his first rodeo with controversy that makes you wonder what exactly Democrats are thinking when they line up behind this guy. The California congressman who once cozied up to a Chinese spy is now facing fresh allegations of inappropriate conduct with staffers, and the whole mess is unfolding exactly 27 days before California’s gubernatorial election begins.
Let’s be clear about what we know and what we don’t. Gen-Z for Change Executive Director Cheyenne Hunt claims she received messages alleging Swalwell had interns sign NDAs to keep them quiet about possible misconduct. No hard evidence has surfaced yet. No named accusers have stepped forward. But another Democratic strategist, Bhavik Lathia, is telling people to take this seriously and promising more revelations soon. When members of your own party are sounding alarms, you’ve got a problem.
The Swalwell campaign is doing what campaigns do when they’re panicking. They’re calling it a conspiracy, blaming MAGA, suggesting this is all because their guy is the frontrunner. Spokesperson Micah Beasley went with the “false and outrageous” defense before we even know the full scope of what’s being alleged. That’s interesting timing, isn’t it? You don’t usually get ahead of accusations unless you’re worried about what’s coming next.
Hunt wasn’t having any of it. She called the campaign’s response “forced” and said they’re clearly bracing for impact. She’s promising the truth will come out about Swalwell’s alleged history with women. Whether that happens remains to be seen, but the smoke is getting thicker.
Now, you might be thinking this sounds like typical election season mudslinging. Fair enough. Politics is a blood sport, especially in California where the governor’s mansion is worth fighting dirty for. But Swalwell brings unique baggage to this race that makes every new accusation land with extra weight.
Remember Fang Fang? Of course you do, because it was one of the most embarrassing intelligence scandals in recent memory. A Chinese spy who went by Christine Fang infiltrated California political circles, got close to Swalwell when he was a city councilman, helped fundraise for his congressional campaign, and even placed an intern in his office. The relationship was reportedly romantic or sexual in nature. When the FBI finally briefed Swalwell about her in 2015, she conveniently fled the country.
This is the same Eric Swalwell who sits on the House Intelligence Committee. The same guy who spent years lecturing Americans about Trump and Russia while he was apparently too distracted by a Chinese honeypot operation to notice what was happening in his own office. The hypocrisy isn’t just rich. It’s suffocating.
Republicans have been asking for years how someone with that kind of judgment gets to see classified intelligence. Nancy Pelosi kept him on the committee anyway, because party loyalty trumps national security concerns apparently. Now Swalwell wants to run the largest state economy in America, and his own party members are telling him to step aside.
Riverside County Sheriff Chad Bianco isn’t mincing words. He’s calling for Swalwell to drop out and save his family the embarrassment of what’s coming. That’s not a partisan hack talking. That’s a law enforcement official who’s seen enough to know when someone’s in serious trouble.
The pattern here matters more than any single allegation. Swalwell has consistently shown poor judgment in who he associates with and how he conducts himself. He built a national brand on self-righteousness, running for president in 2020 on a platform of moral superiority. Now he’s asking Californians to trust him with executive power while dodging questions about NDAs and misconduct.
California deserves better than this. The state faces massive challenges with crime, homelessness, water resources, and an exodus of businesses and taxpayers. Voters need a governor who can focus on solving problems, not one who brings scandal and distraction as standard equipment.
Whether these latest allegations prove true or not, Swalwell has already demonstrated he’s not fit for higher office. The Chinese spy situation alone should have ended his political career. That it didn’t says everything about how broken our political system has become when it comes to accountability.
