Ken Paxton for Attorney General Would Be a Gift to John Cornyn

The timing here is almost too perfect, which should make everyone suspicious. Pam Bondi’s out as Attorney General, and suddenly Ken Paxton’s name is floating around as a potential replacement. Convenient, right? Especially when Paxton happens to be locked in a brutal runoff against John Cornyn for a Texas Senate seat.

Let’s be clear about what’s happening. If Trump taps Paxton for AG and pulls him out of that Texas race, Cornyn walks into the general election without breaking a sweat. The establishment gets exactly what it wants without having to fight for it. That’s not strategy. That’s surrender dressed up as promotion.

Paxton’s supporters are split on this, and they should be. Some are pushing hard for him to get the national job, seeing it as recognition for his relentless legal battles on behalf of conservative principles. Others recognize the trap for what it is. You don’t abandon a winnable Senate fight against an entrenched incumbent just because someone dangles a shiny object in front of you.

The Daily Wire couldn’t confirm whether Paxton’s actually being considered, which tells you something. We’re in rumor territory here, the kind of speculation that benefits certain people more than others. Names are circulating like Lee Zeldin, Harmeet Dhillon, Mike Lee, Ashley Moody, and Eric Schmitt. All capable people. All less politically complicated than Paxton right now.

Andrew Kolvet from Turning Point USA said the next AG has to be ruthless and smart and impossible to distract or slow down. Fair enough. That describes Paxton pretty well, honestly. The man’s been fighting legal battles on multiple fronts for years and hasn’t backed down once. But being the right person for a job doesn’t mean taking it at the wrong time.

Here’s what matters. Texas needs someone in the Senate who will actually fight, not just show up for photo ops and corporate donor meetings. Cornyn’s been in Washington since 2002, and what exactly has he accomplished for conservative values? He’s the guy who cuts deals, who plays nice with Democrats, who treats the Constitution like a suggestion rather than the rulebook. Paxton represents the opposite approach, the kind of aggressive conservatism that actually moves the needle.

Pulling Paxton out now would hand Cornyn a victory he hasn’t earned. It would tell every grassroots conservative in Texas that their votes don’t matter, that the establishment always wins eventually. That’s not how you build a movement. That’s how you kill one.

The Senate race matters more than one Cabinet position. Trump’s got plenty of options for Attorney General. He’s got exactly one shot at replacing Cornyn with someone who won’t fold the first time things get difficult. The math here isn’t complicated.

Paxton should stay in the race. Win or lose, he needs to make Cornyn earn it. Texas conservatives deserve that much. And if Trump’s really serious about draining any remaining swamp water, he’ll understand why keeping Paxton in that fight matters more than any short term appointment.

The establishment’s already circling, hoping this all resolves itself without them having to actually compete. Don’t make it easy for them.
