Swalwell Faces Expulsion Motion as Sexual Assault Allegations Mount

Anna Paulina Luna isn’t wasting time. The Florida Republican announced Saturday she’s filing a motion to expel Eric Swalwell from Congress, and honestly, it’s hard to blame her for the urgency. When four former staffers come forward with allegations of sexual misconduct and assault against a sitting congressman, you’d think the response would be swift and serious. Instead, we’ve watched this story develop with the same glacial pace that seems to define accountability in Washington these days.

The allegations are disturbing. One staffer claims Swalwell assaulted her on multiple occasions. Another told the San Francisco Chronicle that when she was just 17 years old and Swalwell was 38, he started messaging her on Snapchat. You know, that platform where messages conveniently disappear. According to her account, he sent inappropriate pictures and requested naked photos of a minor. Let that sink in for a moment.

This is the same Eric Swalwell who’s been positioning himself as some kind of moral authority on Capitol Hill. The same guy who sat on the Intelligence Committee until Republicans rightfully removed him over his ties to a suspected Chinese spy. The same politician now running for governor of California, apparently believing voters will overlook this mounting pile of credible accusations.

The pattern here matters. We’re not talking about one disgruntled former employee with an axe to grind. Four women have stepped forward, risking their reputations and privacy to tell their stories. That takes courage in a political environment where powerful men still wield enormous influence over careers and narratives.

Luna’s motion faces an uphill battle in a divided Congress, sure. Expelling a member requires a two-thirds vote, which means Democrats would need to join Republicans in holding one of their own accountable. History suggests that’s a tall order. Party loyalty often trumps principle when the cameras are rolling and the votes are counted.

But here’s what really grates. If these allegations involved a Republican congressman, the media feeding frenzy would be relentless. Cable news would run wall-to-wall coverage. Editorial boards would demand immediate resignation. Progressive activists would camp outside his office. The double standard isn’t just obvious anymore. It’s insulting to anyone paying attention.

Swalwell’s gubernatorial campaign was already struggling before these accusations surfaced. California voters might tolerate a lot, but there’s a difference between policy disagreements and credible allegations of sexually assaulting staff members. His political future should be over, full stop. Whether Congress acts or not, voters will have their say.

The broader question extends beyond one congressman’s misconduct. What kind of workplace culture exists in congressional offices where young staffers feel vulnerable to this kind of predatory behavior? These aren’t isolated incidents across one office. This is a systemic problem that both parties have failed to address with anything resembling seriousness.

Luna deserves credit for forcing this issue into the open. Whether her motion succeeds or fails, she’s drawing a line that needed drawing. Some things matter more than political calculations and partisan positioning. Protecting young women from powerful men who abuse their authority should be one of them. Congress will now decide if it agrees.
