Alligator Alcatraz Did Its Job and Now It’s Time to Let the Swamp Reclaim It

The left spent months clutching their pearls over Alligator Alcatraz, that brilliantly named ICE detention facility Ron DeSantis erected deep in the Florida Everglades. They called it cruel. They called it inhumane. They called it everything except what it actually was, which is exactly what a temporary crisis demands when the federal government has spent four years pretending the southern border doesn’t exist.

Now the facility’s closing down, and predictably, those same critics are trying to spin this as some kind of defeat. The New York Times reported Thursday that Florida’s in talks with the Trump administration to shut it down because of operational costs running into the hundreds of millions. The Department of Homeland Security apparently decided the price tag was too steep to justify keeping it open long term.

Here’s what they’re missing. A senior Florida official told reporters that Alligator Alcatraz was always meant to be temporary. The whole point was giving Florida and the Trump administration a rapid response to Biden’s open border disaster. You know what happens when you leave the door wide open for four years? You get millions of illegal crossings, overwhelmed border communities, and states like Florida forced to pick up the federal government’s slack.

The official called it a massive success, and honestly, that’s the right framing. President Trump secured record funding from Congress to build permanent detention sites. As those come online, the need for a makeshift holding facility 36 miles west of Miami surrounded by gators starts to fade. That’s not failure. That’s mission accomplished.

Think about what DeSantis actually pulled off here. He identified a problem the federal government refused to address, found a solution that worked within Florida’s unique geography (and let’s be real, the alligator angle was marketing genius), and executed it fast enough to matter. The facility served its purpose during a genuine crisis. Now that proper infrastructure’s being built, Florida can let the Everglades reclaim that patch of swamp.

This is how government should work. You build what you need when you need it. You don’t create permanent bureaucracies that outlive their usefulness just because shutting them down might look bad in a headline. You solve the immediate problem and move on.

The cost criticism rings hollow too. Yeah, hundreds of millions sounds like a lot until you compare it to the billions we’ve spent processing, housing, and providing services for people who crossed illegally during the Biden years. Sometimes the expensive temporary fix prevents an even more expensive permanent problem.

Florida proved something important with Alligator Alcatraz. State governments can step up when Washington fails. They can innovate, move quickly, and actually address problems instead of forming committees to study them. DeSantis didn’t wait for permission or consensus. He saw what needed doing and did it.

The facility will return to the Everglades, just like it was always supposed to. The gators will reclaim their territory. And Florida will have demonstrated that conservative governance isn’t just about principles, it’s about results. Sometimes the best solution is the one that works right now, not the one that looks perfect in a policy paper.
