Maryland’s Lieutenant Governor Just Shrugged Off Election Errors Like They’re No Big Deal

Let’s get something straight right now. When government officials start telling you that screwing up elections is just part of the process, we’ve got a problem. Maryland Lieutenant Governor Aruna Miller wants you to believe that mailing the wrong ballots to voters is as routine as your morning coffee. “It happens almost in every election,” she said, brushing off concerns like lint from a jacket.

Think about that for a second. We’re talking about the fundamental mechanism of our republic here. The sacred process by which citizens exercise their voice in self-governance. And the second-highest ranking official in Maryland just admitted that errors happen almost every single time, then acted like we’re the crazy ones for caring.

President Trump called for a Department of Justice investigation after Maryland’s State Board of Elections acknowledged that their mail-in ballot vendor, Taylor Print & Visual Impressions, sent incorrect ballots to some voters ahead of the primary elections. Trump didn’t mince words, pointing the finger directly at Democratic Governor Wes Moore and suggesting the error wasn’t accidental but deliberate interference designed to benefit Democrats.

Now you might say Trump’s being too aggressive here. But honestly, when did we start accepting mediocrity in election administration? When did “oops, our bad” become an acceptable response to ballot distribution failures? The private sector would fire people for this level of incompetence. Your bank doesn’t get to say “well, sometimes we send your money to the wrong account, it happens almost every quarter.”

Miller defended the situation by emphasizing that the Board of Elections operates independently from the governor’s administration. That’s supposed to make us feel better, apparently. The governor can’t be blamed because technically a separate body handles elections. Except Moore appointed members to that board. He sets the tone for state government. He’s responsible for ensuring competent people run essential functions. That’s literally what executive leadership means.

The real issue here isn’t just one mistake with one vendor. It’s the casual acceptance of failure as inevitable. It’s the shrug of the shoulders when basic governmental functions break down. We demand precision from our military, from our air traffic controllers, from anyone whose mistakes could have serious consequences. But elections? Eh, stuff happens.

You know what this reveals? A fundamental lack of seriousness about election integrity. And before anyone starts screaming about election denial or conspiracy theories, let’s be clear. Wanting elections administered correctly isn’t radical. Expecting ballots to reach the right voters isn’t asking too much. Demanding accountability when errors occur isn’t undermining democracy. It’s protecting it.

The Maryland incident follows a pattern we’ve seen repeatedly. Officials implement complicated mail-in voting systems that create multiple points of failure, then act surprised when failures occur. They outsource critical functions to vendors, then distance themselves from responsibility when those vendors mess up. They promise security and accuracy, then tell us mistakes are normal when problems surface.

Here’s the thing about limited government and individual liberty. They only work when the government functions we do allow actually work correctly. We conservatives believe in a smaller state, but the parts that remain must operate with excellence. Elections fall squarely in that category. If government can’t even mail the correct ballot to registered voters, why should we trust it with anything more complex?

Miller’s dismissive attitude represents everything wrong with modern bureaucracy. No urgency. No accountability. Just excuses wrapped in technical explanations about independent boards and separate administrations. Meanwhile, regular citizens who requested ballots received the wrong ones, potentially disenfranchising them through sheer incompetence.

The vendor screwed up. Fine. Mistakes happen in any human endeavor. But the response matters. Instead of immediate transparency, aggressive corrective action, and genuine accountability, we got deflection and normalization. That’s unacceptable regardless of your political affiliation.
